Restoring Dignity: Mercy Fistula Center Leading the Fight in Ghana

For countless women in Ghana, obstetric fistula has meant years of silent suffering—marked by isolation, pain, and stigma. But at the Mercy Fistula Center in Mankessim, Central Region, hope is being restored every single day.

In just the past 20 months, 220 women have received life-changing surgeries at Mercy. Each procedure is more than a medical repair—it is a transformation that restores health, dignity, and the chance to rebuild a full life. This work has made Mercy not only a beacon of healing in the Central Region, but also a national leader in fistula care.

Mercy’s impact extends far beyond the operating room:

  • National Referral Center: Recognized as Ghana’s primary referral site for fistula care.
  • Part of Ghana’s Medical System: As an annex of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Mercy is tightly connected to the country’s top teaching institution.
  • Training the Next Generation: A teaching hub for residents in urogynecology, ensuring that tomorrow’s surgeons are equipped to expand fistula care nationwide.

This unique combination of direct patient care, referral leadership, and surgical training positions Mercy as a cornerstone of Ghana’s plan to eliminate fistula by 2030. Every woman healed, every resident trained, and every survivor reintegrated into her community brings Ghana closer to that vision.
